Peru’s Mining Ministry Reports Decline in Gold and Silver Production
RENO, NV - Peru Ministry of Energy and Mines reported a 11.17% drop in gold mining production for the first 10 months of this year, as well as a 40.39% increase in iron ore production and a nearly 30% boost in molybdenum output during the same period.
Peruvian mines produced 136,024,854 grams (4,373,300 troy ounces) of gold from January through October of 2010, an 11.7% decline from the production of 153,128,800 grams (4,923,205 ounces) of gold reported during the same period of 2009.
The country mined 3,017,157 kilograms (97,003,849 troy ounces) of silver during the first 10 months of this year, down 5.87% from the 3,205,382 kilograms (103,055,424 ounces) of silver produced during the same period of last year.
Peru’s copper production was down 2.49% to 1,027,424 tonnes mined from January to October 2010, compared to the 1,053,636 tonnes mined for the first 10 months of 2009. However, moly production rose 29.65% from 10,206 tonnes during the first 10 months of 2009 to 13,232 tonnes from January to October of this year.
Iron ore production jumped 40.39% to 5,010,272 long tons for the first 10 months of 2010, compared to 3,568,852 long tons reported during the same period of last year.
Zinc production dropped slightly during the first 10 months of this year from 1,241,325 tonnes a year ago to 1,249,696 tonnes.
Lead production plummeted 12.41% during the first 10 months of this year to 220,615 tonnes, down from 251,869 tonnes for the same period of 2009.
Peruvian tin production dropped 7.70% to 28,986 tonnes for the period from January through October of this year, compared to 31,403 tonnes reported during the same period of last year.
Finally, Peru’s tungsten production was up 12.55% for the first 10 months of 2010 to 602 tonnes, compared to 534 tonnes reported during the same period of 2009.
